RAF Leuchars Airshow 2011 Official DVD or Blu-ray

The Royal Air Force in Scotland has taken a real hit recently losing Tornado F3, Nimrod, and a Tornado squadron at Lossiemouth. The news that RAF Leuchars is to close added a poignancy to this year’s airshow.

Bad weather on preceding days prevented some historic types appearing but several fast jet displays including the explosive Tornado Role Demo and a welcome appearance by La Patrouille France and Avro Vulcan more than made up.

It was damp and wet on the day too but that made for some spectacular skies and effects as the fast jets burst with condensation clouds. Even the Vulcan was trailing wingtip vortices.

This was The Red Arrows first full show after tragically losing Flt Lt John Egging and their Big Battle arrival in formation with a black liveried Hawk was an emotional and well received moment. Everyone watched their display in a newly appreciated light accompanied by Baggers' appropriately modified commentary. 

The tribute to Operation Ellamy in Libya and the 9 Sqn Typhoon 3 ship contributed to make this a true RAF event. If it transpires that it is the last Leuchars show then it will have been a memorable one.
